Crystal Cleansing, Energising, Programming and Storing

Once you have bought your crystals, it is extremely important that you cleanse them. During their journey to you, crystals will have picked up and stored many different energies from being mined to being in a shop. Many people may have touched the crystals in that process and their energy will have been transferred onto the crystal. It is also important to note that the cleansing process will become an extremely important part of your crystal care program, and each crystal will need to be cleansed regularly.

The way that you store your crystals may allow them to pick up various energies. For example, if your crystal is placed in your general environment at home or at work and not being used, it can still absorb negative energy from the environment. Regularly cleansing your crystals of any negative energy is very important. Crystals vibrate at a low level, therefore they are are sensitive and will pick up on frequencies, vibrations, impurities and other imprints within their environment. If crystals are not cleansed regularly they will become heavy, dense and full of negativity. They will not work as effectively and they may even lose their lustre and colour.

There are various ways to cleanse your crystals. It is important here that you use your intuition and cleanse your crystals as you feel best suits them and yourself. It may be that you find that after a particular cleansing practice that a certain crystal still doesn't feel as it should. If this happens then try another cleansing ritual which may suit it more. The more you attune to and use your crystals, the more you will intuitively know what they need and what practices best suit each individual crystal that you work with.

To cleanse your crystals, you can:

  • Burn Sage (Mugwort or White Sage are equally effective), and let the smoke from the burning sage engulf your crystals.

  • Bury your crystals in your garden for 24 - 48 hrs. Crystals came from and were formed deep within the earth and by returning them to a similar environment, they will be cleansed naturally.

  • Wash your crystals under running water. This can be under your tap at home, but I suggest a running stream if possible.

  • Add a few drops of a Bach Flower Remedy to some spring water and let your crystals sit in the mixture overnight.

  • Use fire as a tool to cleanse your crystals by passing each crystal through the flame a few times.

  • Place your crystals on a Selenite plate or in a Selenite bowl overnight.

 
In addition to cleansing your crystals, they may also need to be energised. Just as humans need food and water for energy, crystals also need to be charged or re-energised. Some of the cleansing practices noted above also have the ability to energise your crystals at the same time. For example, placing your crystals in the running water of a stream.

To energise your crystals, you can:

  • Place male crystals in the sunshine. This will recharge them naturally using the sun's energy.

  • Place female crystals in the moonlight. This will naturally recharge them using the gentle energy of the moon.

  • Place your crystals outside in a safe place during a thunderstorm.

  • Recharge your crystals with your own breath. You can do this by sitting still, grounding yourself and then setting the intention of energising your crystals with your breath.

  • Place your crystals on a Selenite plate or in a Selenite bowl overnight.

 
Once your crystals have been cleansed and energised, you may wish to programme them. Programming your crystals is a way of attuning yourself and your crystal to one another and also a way of setting the intention and focus for that particular crystal. It is best to programme your crystals away from any electrical appliances so that they do not cause any electromagnetic interference. Ensure that the energy within the room that you are using is clear. A great way to do this is to burn sage throughout the room and then open all the windows and doors to invite clear energy inside.

To programme your crystal, hold it in your hand and set the intention for it within your mind. Focus purely on your crystal and the intention that you have for it. Focus on the energy of the intention and transmit this to your crystal. You may find that you know instinctively when this is successful.

This can be carried out as often as you like, however it is advised that you first cleanse your crystal and rid it of any negative energy so that it is then able to be programmed effectively.

There are many varying views on how best to store your crystals and it is advised that you choose which method suits you and your chosen crystals the most. However, always make sure that your crystals are safely stored away from children and pets. Ideally, it is best to store your crystals somewhere that they cannot be handled by other people.

To store your crystals, you can:

  • Place your crystals in individual silk or natural fabric pouches so that they will not chip or become damaged.

  • Place your crystals in a Selenite bowl. This will cleanse and energise your crystals while they are being stored.

  • Place your crystals in a wooden box.

  • Display your crystals in your home or office.

 
It is important that you take note of the type of material used for storing your crystals. It is advisable to use natural materials such as silk or hessian pouches, or wooden boxes.
